A conventional Englishman and his wife have long been casual friends with Damian, a feckless, chronically broke, thrice-married friend whose occasional visits lend their lives colour.

To their horror, their beloved and sensible daughter falls head over heels for the cad, and it is clear she will marry him. The price of enlivening their "stay-at-home smugness" suddenly seems awfully high.
